The New York Times reported Tuesday that two unidentified major league umpires are on probation for gambling, but baseball won’t comment on any discipline handed out to the men in blue.

“The public has a right to know when persons are removed from the field of play,” deputy commissioner Steve Greenberg said. “Otherwise, it will not become public.”

The Times reported that an umpire from each league is under probation until December for placing small bets on sporting events other than baseball.
