OXNARD : Doctors to Donate Exam Fees to Schools
Three doctors who gave physicals Wednesday to Oxnard high school athletes said they will donate their fees to the schools to help purchase badly needed emergency medical equipment.
The students, from Rio Mesa, Channel Islands, Hueneme and other local high schools, were required to have the physical exams before participating in school sports, said Dr. Rob Lewis Jr. The athletes paid about $14 each for the exams, which were done at Oxnard College. Lewis said he and doctors Richard Figueroa and Charles Giangarra plan to meet with athletic directors at the schools to find out where funding is most needed.
“Some of the money will go to field safety and first-aid equipment,” Lewis said. “Some other monies might go to whatever use they deem necessary.”
State budget problems have made it increasingly difficult for schools to spend funds on extracurricular activities, including high school sports.
