A Sylmar man lying on the Southern Pacific railroad tracks near San Fernando Road and Polk Street died after a train ran over him, Los Angeles police said Wednesday.

Cristino Marinero, 31, was found dead at the scene about 11:15 p.m. Tuesday, said Sgt. Steve Williams. Marinero was identified when his relatives contacted police on Wednesday afternoon, said Mike Joseph of the Los Angeles County coroner’s office.

“The train tried several times to wake him up--it blew its horn many times to try to rouse him but couldn’t,” Williams said. “It couldn’t stop in time. It takes a train about a mile to stop.”

Police are unsure why Marinero was on the tracks, Williams said.
