THOUSAND OAKS : Officials to Inspect Road-Paving Project

State officials are scheduled to visit Thousand Oaks today to inspect the state’s largest road-paving project using crushed rubber.

The California Integrated Waste Management Board, a state agency charged with overseeing recycling and trash disposal policies, will tour local streets recently resurfaced with a material made out of scrap automobile tires, asphalt and oil.

The board will also meet with officials from the city and the Sun Valley company that manufactures the rubber and asphalt material.

City Community Services Manager Joe Hinsberg said the six-member board requested the tour because it is planning to adopt regulations that may require other cities to increase their use of scrap rubber.

Thousand Oaks recently began a $3-million project that will use about 53,700 tons of scrap tires to pave 140 city streets. Public works officials say that streets paved with the rubber and asphalt mixture will last longer, and that the use of recycled tires saves the city money.
