From Times Staff and Wire Reports

Animal handlers are swimming round-the-clock in Quebec City’s aquarium with the youngest whale ever rescued, coaxing it to stay afloat and encouraging it to fight for its life. The beluga, believed to be less than a week old and weighing only 130 pounds, was airlifted to the aquarium pool in Quebec after washing up on the banks of the St. Lawrence River. Pierre Beland, head of Quebec’s National Institute of Ecotoxicology, said he believed that this was the first effort to save such a young whale.
