U.S. Volleyball Teams At Zone Meet

The NORCECA Zone Championships begin Sunday in Regina, Canada, for the San Diego-based U.S. men’s and women’s volleyball teams, but aside from a starting day, the championships mean something different for each team.

For the women, it is one of the few remaining opportunities to qualify for the 1992 Summer Olympics--there are five berths left. If the U.S. women don’t win this seven-team championship, their last chance to qualify would be the World Cup in Japan in November. Seven of Coach Terry Liskevych’s 12 players have Olympic experience.

As the defending Olympic champions, the men’s team already has qualified for the 12-team competition in Barcelona.

But with the recent return of 1988 Olympians Jeff Stork, Bob Ctvrtlik, Craig Buck, Dave Saunders and Doug Partie to the national team, it is the first time first-year Coach Fred Sturm has the veterans back playing with Scott Fortune and Eric Sato, also ’88 Olympians. They have been with the team on a more permanent basis.

Cuba, winners of last week’s gold medal in the Pam American Games, and Canada are expected to give the men their strongest competition.

BASEBALL

Escondido American Legion Post 149 was beaten by Berklawn, N.J., 3-2, in a second-round winners bracket game at the 66th American Legion World Series in Boyertown, Pa.

In other games, Newark, Ohio, defeated Sarasota, Fla., 4-3 in 10 innings; and Gonzales, La., eliminated Kansas City, Kan., 9-4.

HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL

Point Loma High School has announced that it will have a memorial service Aug. 29 at 2 p.m. in the school’s gymnasium for longtime girls’ basketball Coach Lee Trepanier, who died Aug. 2 after a long bout with cancer.

Trepanier coached four state champions from 1984-87 and compiled a 335-51 career record.

His family has requested that those interested can contribute to the Lee Trepanier Memorial Scholarship Fund at Point Loma High School, 2335 Chatsworth Road.
