Quarterback Timm Rosenbach of the Phoenix Cardinals suffered a serious injury to his right knee and will be out at least six weeks, perhaps the entire season.

Rosenbach was running a quarterback sneak in a goal-line drill Wednesday night when his cleats caught in the turf.

X-rays revealed no fracture of the bone, but Cardinal spokesman Paul Jensen said tests showed Rosenbach “completely ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament in his knee.”

Rosenbach, from Washington State, took every snap for the Cardinals last season and guided Phoenix to a 3-0 record in exhibition games this summer.

Coach Joe Bugel said backup Tom Tupa will start tonight’s game against Denver with rookie Craig Kupp playing the second half.

The Cardinals open the regular season Sept. 1 against the Rams at Anaheim Stadium.
