NEWBURY PARK : Victim’s Dad Vows to Ignore Probation

Share

A Newbury Park man said Friday that he will stop reporting to county officials as required by probation he received for threatening a prosecutor who he says botched the case against two men charged with beating his son to death.

Charles Flores, 48, said in a telephone interview that he has been frustrated in his quest for a rehearing of his son’s case, which ended in acquittal for one defendant and a 90-day sentence for the other. If Flores violates his five-year probation, he could be returned to jail to serve the 120-day sentence he received for threatening the life of Deputy Dist. Atty. Richard Holmes in February, 1990.

His son, John, died of brain injuries he suffered in a brawl outside a party in Newbury Park in January, 1989.

Larnell Bush was convicted of aggravated assault in July, 1989, and sentenced to 90 days in jail. John Yurek was acquitted of manslaughter in August, 1989.

Flores said he will no longer attend twice-monthly meetings with his probation officer in Simi Valley after a final meeting on Sept. 10. And he said he will continue to work at a construction site in Nevada even though his court permit to travel out of state will have expired.

“I’m not a crazed maniac, I’m a guy that lost a kid, and I’m very upset about it,” Flores said. “All I want is for them to listen to me.”
