Grumman Wildcats, P-51 Mustangs and other fighter planes from World War II will fly overhead.

Tanks, missile launchers, howitzers and equipment used to train American troops for Operation Desert Storm in the Persian Gulf will be on the ground.

And members of the Ninety-Nines, a women pilots’ association, will take people aloft for spins in Piper Cubs.

It’s all part of the eighth annual Hawthorne Air Faire, which winds up today at the Municipal Airport with a variety of displays, souvenir and food booths and classic cars. There’ll even be Batzilla, a fantasy car used to motivate youngsters to fight drugs and crime. Hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

“We’re focusing on Desert Storm as the keepers of the peace, and the knights of the air, those pioneers, dreamers and engineers of aviation that our generation is benefiting from,” said show spokesman Tom Quintana.

There’ll be a downed Scud missile recovered during the Persian Gulf War, along with a Patriot missile launcher like those that did battle with the Scuds. Vintage-aircraft buffs will be able to see World War I-era biplanes.

Northrop Corp., Rockwell International and other aerospace giants will display their technology. A series of historic photos will recall the Battle of Britain, in which the scrappy Royal Air Force thwarted German plans to invade England in 1940.

Special guests at the show include Air Vice Marshal Sir William Wratten, who masterminded the RAF’s role in the Persian Gulf War, and Flight Lt. John Peters, one of the British pilots who was downed and held captive in Iraq.

“The Air Faire is a way of showing the benefits of general aviation and the aviation industry that has been here for over 70 years,” Quintana said. “The South Bay economy owes a lot to aviation, from airplane manufacturing to support functions at LAX.”
