Votes for and Against Referendum on the Dana Point General Plan
I cannot agree with the Dana Point Action Coalition and its attempt to overturn approval of the Dana Point General Plan. If successful, it would only mean that the city could waste another half-million dollars or so of our tax money to go through another protracted and unnecessary General Plan process.
Councilwoman Judy Curreri has suggested that the General Plan be put on the ballot even though the petition was flawed. Her argument is that it’s not important that the petition may have been flawed, but it is important that there is a substantial number of registered voters in Dana Point who want another look at the General Plan.
I applaud councilperson Curreri for her courage to stand against Mayor Mike Eggers and Councilwoman Eileen Krause. However, I believe both she and the coalition are wrong in calling for a referendum for the General Plan. Too much money has already been spent on this process.
There is still ample opportunity for the people to input to the General Plan process. The city must submit the General Plan to the state Coastal Commission for approval and certification. My experience with the Coastal Commission is that they will listen to the people.
