The first group of U.S. Navy family members who fled at the height of Mt. Pinatubo’s eruptions returned Saturday to Subic Bay Naval Station, a Navy spokesman said.

The volcano ejected ash up to 7 1/2 miles high Saturday and shook with 66 earthquakes during a 24-hour period, officials said.

Nevertheless, 99 family members aboard two U.S. Air Force planes landed at Cubi Point airstrip near Subic, about 50 miles northwest of Manila, Senior Chief Petty Officer James Jones said.

Jones said the first group came from Guam, where they had stayed since leaving Subic just days after the 5,758-foot volcano began erupting in June.

The U.S. Navy expects about 3,500 Navy dependents to return to Subic by mid-September.
