Style : LOOKS : The Clean Face

Say goodby to the natural look. Fall’s big news is the clean face. Makeup artist Lucienne Zammit, who created the look for these photos, explains: “It’s a clean face in that it’s made clean with makeup--foundation, eye shadow, lipstick. The face looks polished, very much ‘done.’ ”

In addition to cheeks covered with translucent foundation and powder, “there are nice, rich lips” made full by using two tones, Zammit says. Fall also brings “very big eyes,” which she achieves by applying lots of shadow to the upper eyelid and much less below. Eyebrows are dramatically arched, thinner than in the past and carefully groomed.

Says Zammit, whose work has appeared in Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar and commercials for Pepsi: “It’s time to start wearing makeup again. Everyone should choose a matte finish, nothing shiny and nothing frosty. I’m especially fond of The Nakeds by Ultima II, and I always use MAC (Makeup Art Cosmetics) lipstick, a Canadian brand sold at Nordstrom.”
