SANTA PAULA : Woman Killed in Broadside Collision

A 44-year-old Fillmore woman died Sunday night after her car was broadsided at the intersection of Briggs and West Telegraph roads near Santa Paula, authorities said.

The woman, whose name was not released pending notification of relatives, was driving a subcompact car north on Briggs Road when Abel Ballestero, 79, of Santa Paula drove his Cadillac into the side of her car, California Highway Patrol Officer Jerry Sawasaki said.

The victim was taken to Santa Paula Memorial Hospital, where she was declared dead at 9:24 p.m., Sawasaki said. Ballestero was being treated for two broken wrists and other injuries late Sunday night.

Sawasaki said it was unclear Sunday night who was at fault in the collision.
