PRO FOOTBALL DAILY REPORT : RAMS : Coaching Staff Keys on Cardinals

Share

The Rams’ coaching staff spent Sunday watching films of the Phoenix Cardinals, who will come to Anaheim Stadium next Sunday for the regular season opener.

“Right now, we don’t know that much about them,” Coach John Robinson said.

“By the end of the day, we’ll be very knowledgeable.”

The opener will put the Rams’ 4-3 defense on display as a complete package for the first time. Defensive coordinator Jeff Fisher has shown parts of their schemes through the exhibition season, but they have not been tested against the run.

“We haven’t faced a team that runs the ball at our tackles,” Robinson said.

“But in terms of the pass rush and intensity, I think we’re going in the right direction.”

Robinson is encouraged by the pass defense, although the Rams did not have a sack in four exhibitions.

The emergence of Kevin Greene at defensive end would do a lot to increase the pass rush. Greene, who had 13 sacks last season, has moved from outside linebacker this season and spent the preseason adjusting to the new position.

“We were not successful at it terms of stats and sacks, but we were able to apply pressure,” Robinson said.

“Kevin Greene was not heard from much and he will be a factor. We did not use him all that much.

“It’s that time when you stop experimenting with things and get down to business.”
