Vacationers Pick Up Trash

Share

My family had the opportunity to spend nine days on vacation in and around Ventura the first part of August. We were joined by our eldest son, Aaron, who had spent three weeks at Camp Ramah in Ojai. One of the projects the Camp established was an environmental group. Aaron quickly displayed the Los Angeles Times of July 20 noting his picture cleaning up a wildcat dump near Foster Park. He was so proud of what he and his colleagues had accomplished.

Spending each day at the beach in Ventura, I quickly observed that your beach is being taken for granted by the “locals.” Inspired by our son, each evening our family gathered recyclables, including cans, bottles and paper products, only to find limited containers on the beach to deposit such trash. I did observe your “recycling centers” at the shopping malls, as well as a disposal bin in front of each house along the street where we were staying. Hey guys--why not set up recycling bins at the beach?

We were told dogs were not allowed at the beach, so we left our two dogs at home. I quickly learned that the beach was doggy haven, requiring a “look where you step” approach.

Ventura is a beautiful jewel that is going to the dumps. Bend down California, and pick up your trash.
