Po Wins Second-Round Match at Open
Kimberly Po of Rolling Hills advanced to the third round of the U.S. Open tennis tournament with a 6-2, 6-4 second-round victory over Anne Smith on Thursday at New York.
Po is ranked 180th in the Virginia Slims rankings and Smith is 53rd. Po, 19, will meet Natalia Zevereva of the Soviet Union in a match expected to be played Saturday. Zevereva advanced by upsetting 16th-seeded Anke Huber, 6-2, 6-4.
Po helped lead UCLA to the NCAA final in May. She was the only Bruin winner as Stanford beat UCLA for the title, 5-1.
Po twice won junior doubles titles at the U.S. Open and was 60-0 as a Miraleste High senior, winning the Southern Section singles championship.
Zevereva also figured in a first-round mixed doubles match involving a South Bay player. She teamed with Jim Pugh of Palos Verdes in a 6-1, 6-4 loss to the Czechoslovakian brother-and-sister duo of Helena Sukova and Cyril Suk, 6-1, 6-4. Pugh and Zevereva were seeded fourth.
