Pop by Any Other Name?

Regarding Chris Willman’s excellent article “Rediscovering the Beatles (Sort Of)” (Aug. 18):

So the record industry isn’t sure if there’s a market for Power Pop again? The implication seems to be that the music is too wimpy. What the genre needs is a new image and name (and, of course, a leader), the same way that disco was able to resurrect itself under the term dance music .

Power Pop conjures up images of Tony Bennett attempting to slam-dance. Power is correct, because of the post-punk implications, but Pop is best reserved for artists like Natalie Cole.
