Trustees Give Latinos Short Shrift

Share

Re: “Rancho Santiago Hires Chancellor” (Aug. 27), wherein the Board of Trustees unanimously chose an outsider to head a community college with a high population of Latinos: The Board of Trustees missed an opportunity to hire a Latino with outstanding qualifications and one who was already familiar with Orange County.

The trustees did not select William Vega from Coastline Community College in Fountain Valley and a leader in the Mexican-American community of Orange County, or Max Castillo, another outstanding Latino leader from Texas.

The Latino community should have had more input in the selection of the new chancellor, and I think that they should replace the members in the board by challenging them come election time.
