Recent events in the Soviet Union should have a profound effect on the search for the new secretary general of the United Nations. In the immediate years ahead the United Nations must perform a major role in resolving our global problems; the role of the new secretary general is of immense importance.
While there are several qualified individuals under consideration, one person stands above the others, one person who has already made a dramatic and positive change in world events--Mikhail Gorbachev. Let us not forget that it was Gorbachev who instituted democracy and freedom of expression in the Soviet Union, and this is the underlying reason why Russian President Boris Yeltsin and his supporters were able to defeat the recent coup attempt.
Gorbachev has all the qualifications needed for the job: great intelligence, a broad global perspective, wide respect, dynamic personality and a definitive vision for the future.
