REPORT CARD / T.J. SIMERS : Opening Day Problems Show Up Again

Share

F/A: QUARTERBACKS

First-half “here-we-go-again-performance” is replaced by promising second-half effort. At least John Friesz looks like a quarterback.

C: RUNNING BACKS

Search parties have been sent out for Ronnie Harmon. Marion Butts goes right and Friesz turns left, and where was Marion when they were working on that play?

C: RECEIVERS

Anthony Miller has stopped talking to the media. When’s he going to start catching the ball? Shawn Jefferson offers glimpse of brighter days ahead. Nate Lewis is here to stay.

D: OFFENSIVE LINE

Sorry. Try and say something nice, but if John Friesz takes as many hits as he did in the opener, the Chargers’ future will be in Bob Gagliano’s hands. Ouch!

C: DEFENSIVE LINE

Burt Grossman got a sack for the Chargers and he was so stunned he had to call for medical attention on the field. George Hinkle shows up for first time in four years.

C+: LINEBACKERS

If ankle injury to Junior Seau had been considered more serious, they might as well have packed up the gear and called it quits.

C: DEFENSIVE BACKS

If Gill Byrd played against Bubby Brister weekly, he’d have more catches than Jerry Rice. Donald Frank picks up where he left off in exhibition play, letting foes score at will.

F: SPECIAL TEAMS

Another flubbed fake punt, a missed field goal, poor punt coverage and less-than-dazzling field position on kickoffs. Just like the good old days.

C: COACHING

Trouble on horizon. Coach Dan Henning second-guessed Ron Lynn’s trick-oriented defense. If I’m Lynn, I get unlisted number before Alex Spanos picks up the phone.
