It’s official: Randall Cunningham is out for the season.

The Eagles’ quarterback sustained two ligament tears that will require surgery, and the team doctor recommended Monday that the All-Pro wait until next season before coming back.

Cunningham, however, said he will leave today for Los Angeles to consult with his family physician, Dr. Clarence Shields, an associate physician with the Rams.

Cunningham, who started every game for the Eagles since the end of the 1987 players’ strike, added he would also talk with orthopedic surgeons Dr. Frank Jobe and Dr. Richard Steadman.

“I know that I need surgery, but I just want to have someone else look at it,” Cunningham said at a news conference.

Mike Rozier, the Atlanta Falcons’ leading rusher last season, ended his holdout and signed what is believed to be a three-year contract with base salaries totaling just more than $2 million. He isn’t expected to be activated in time for Sunday’s home opener against the Minnesota Vikings.

Atlanta receiver Andre Rison feared he suffered a shoulder separation Sunday against Kansas City, but X-rays were negative.

Cleveland defensive back Raymond Clayborn has a broken bone in his right leg and will be placed on injured reserve this week, making him the fifth member of the Browns’ secondary lost to injury.

Seattle veteran Jeff Kemp almost certainly will start at quarterback against the New York Jets Sunday in place of injured Dave Krieg, Seahawk Coach Chuck Knox said.

Kemp and rookie Dan McGwire are Seattle’s only uninjured quarterbacks after Krieg broke his right thumb during Sunday’s 27-24 loss at New Orleans.

The Seahawks’ fourth quarterback, Kelly Stouffer, is on injured reserve with a separated right shoulder and won’t be eligible to return for three more weeks.
