A Upland man suspected of drunk driving was killed Tuesday when he was thrown from his van after it flew off the elevated Corona Expressway overpass in Pomona and landed on the street below, authorities said.

Lewis Troncoso, 46, was thrown 30 feet when his van hit a fence at the bottom of the hill. He died about an hour later at Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center, California Highway Patrol Officer Robert Coulter said.

The accident occurred on the Valley Boulevard on-ramp to the southbound Corona Expressway, Coulter said. The van hit the guardrail and sailed over it, rolling over several times until it hit a fence.

Valley Boulevard, where Troncoso landed, was reopened about an hour after the accident. Traffic on the Corona Expressway was not affected, California Highway Patrol Sgt. Steve Vaughn said.

“He was a drinking driver,” Vaughn said.

There were no immediate reports of injuries to others, the CHP said.
