NUMMI Begins Production of Toyota Pickups: The first U.S.-built Toyota compact pickup truck rolled off the line last week at the New United Manufacturing Inc. assembly plant in Fremont, Calif., Toyota said. NUMMI, which is jointly owned and operated by Toyota and General Motors, has hired about 300 employees to work on the recently completed truck assembly line and expects to hire an additional 400 by the time the line reaches its capacity of 100,000 trucks a year sometime next summer.
