A jury deliberated only 35 minutes before acquitting a Lemon Grove man of murdering a pimp.

The speedy verdict came Wednesday for Corey Barnes, 21, who had been in County Jail since the Dec. 27, 1990, shooting of Tory Burdex, 25, in Chula Vista.

Barnes was ordered released from jail by San Diego Superior Court Judge Michael Wellington.

Barnes’ attorney, Steve Feldman, had argued that it was a prostitute who shot Burdex in the back because she did not want to go back to work for him.

Both Feldman and Deputy Dist. Atty. David Greenberg told jurors on Aug. 20, when the trial opened, that most of the witnesses would tell lies and that it was up to the jurors to determine the truth.

“For a crime committed in hell, you won’t have angels as witnesses,” Greenberg told jurors.
