Upscale Resale Hits Santa Clarita

Share

Recently I spent an entire day prowling around Newhall and Saugus and not only fell in love with the territory, but found that upscale resale has arrived in the Santa Clarita Valley.

First I visited Liz’s Good Stuff, open less than a year but jammed with inventory. And the name applies: This is “the good stuff.” Liz Kennedy is the proprietor, and her good taste is reflected in the merchandise.

A stunning black Fabrice that probably originally demanded about $3,000 was $950 and in perfect shape. Liz’s mother, Raye Palumbo, who was managing the store, said she knew that it had been worn only once. A lovely Jack Bryan chiffon in black with bead trim and an absolutely fabulous tulip skirt was a mere $95, and it looked like $500. A floor-length black jersey from Jona (size 6) with thin straps of rhinestones, for only $125, would spice up any special evening.

There are lots of classy labels on the racks here and, as in most resale shops, sales are on a consignment basis, with a 60%-40% split. The general arrangement of the store is dressy apparel in the front room and sportswear in the back. It’s well-organized, sparkling clean and in excellent taste.

Liz’s Good Stuff, Oak Tree Plaza, 22940 1/2 W. Lyons Ave., Newhall, (805) 254-2282. Hours: 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays. MasterCard and Visa.

Right next door is a little treasure of a store--also resale--for children’s clothes. Twice Is Nice carries a wide selection of good names in clothing for boys and girls--from newborn to preteen-age--at prices to gladden the heart of any fashion-conscious mom.

Names such as Jimmy’z, Christian Dior and Jessica McClintock grace the racks at about one-fourth the original price.

The shop is sparkling clean, as is the merchandise, which has been washed, ironed or dry-cleaned by the hard-working owners.

Sales are on consignment, split 60-40 on the apparel and 50-50 on furniture and such items as strollers.

In Saugus, my big discovery was Closet Talk, a tiny resale boutique tucked away in a lovely lattice-covered complex, complete with babbling brook and lush greenery--a cool and serene hideaway.

Closet Talk has been open only a few months, and the inventory is a touch limited, though very select.

Names such as Ungaro, Donna Karan, Giorgio Armani, Escada and Valentino, at affordable prices, should bring the sharp shopper running.

A beautiful 100% silk ensemble (slacks and coat) looked like $400 but was tagged at $58. Sold to the lady with the yellow dog! This shop goes on my “regular” list.

Closet Talk, 26111 Bouquet Canyon Road, Suite B-5, Saugus, (805) 254-1358. Hours: 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays. Cash or check only.
