A Los Angeles ex-convict was shot and killed during a fight Tuesday night in Palisades Park, police said Wednesday.

Carlos Espada, 27, was shot twice in the chest and stomach during an argument with four or five youths who appeared to be “gang types,” Santa Monica Police Sgt. Bill Brucker said.

Brucker said the fight might have stemmed from “a drug deal gone bad,” according to witnesses who observed the incident. Espada had a history of drug-related arrests and convictions and had recently been released from jail, Brucker said.

The incident occurred at about 11:20 p.m. in an area of the park near the corner of Ocean and Arizona avenues, and Espada was pronounced dead less than two hours later at the UCLA Medical Center, Brucker said. He said police have no suspects.
