PREVIEW ’91 : Cable Gets the Big Picture

It’s 1990 all over again--at least if you subscribe to one or more of the premium cable networks. Most of last year’s big hits, along with more than a few bombs, will be making their cable premieres this fall.

Perhaps most anticipated by film fans isn’t an old film at all. The documentary “Heart of Darkness: A Filmmaker’s Apocalypse” is Eleanor Coppola’s chronicle of the production of her husband Francis Ford Coppola’s “Apocalypse Now” during the late 1970s. Coming in October to Showtime.

Below is a list of feature films you can look forward to this fall on your small screen--so set your VCRs!

“Wild at Heart”--David Lynch’s twisted version of “The Wizard of Oz” stars Laura Dern and Nicolas Cage. Saturday at 10 p.m. “Akira Kurosawa’s Dreams”--Man’s abuse of nature is examined in eight dream sequences by the master Japanese director. Sept. 21 at 4 p.m.

“Graffiti Bridge”--Prince wrote, directed and stars in this sequel to “Purple Rain.” October.

“Roger Corman’s Frankenstein Unbound”--John Hurt, Bridget Fonda and Jason Patric star in a new version of the classic monster story. October.

“Monsieur Hire”--Michel Blanc (“Menage”) and Sandrine Bonnaire headline the French thriller. October.

“Miller’s Crossing”--Joel and Ethan Coen’s acclaimed ‘20s gangster melodrama stars Gabriel Bryne, Marcia Gay Harden and Albert Finney. November.

“The Sheltering Sky”--Bernardo Bertolucci’s adaptation of Paul Bowles’ classic novel stars Debra Winger, John Malkovich and Campbell Scott. November.

“Welcome Home, Roxy Carmichael”--Winona Ryder plays--what else?--a rebellious teen in this romantic comedy. December.

“Listen Up: The Lives of Quincy Jones”--Documentary on the legendary music man. December.

“Peter Pan”--Disney’s heartwarming animated musical version of the James M. Barrie classic. Sept. 15 at 7 p.m.

“White Fang”--Ethan Hawke and Klaus Maria Brandauer star in an adaptation of Jack London’s tale of a young man and his friendship with a half-dog/half-wolf. Nov. 11 at 7 p.m.

HBO

“Presumed Innocent”--Harrison Ford, Bonnie Bedelia, Greta Sacchi and Brian Dennehy star in the mystery-thriller based on Scott Turow’s bestseller. Tonight at 8 p.m.

“The Two Jakes”--Jack Nicholson stars in and directed this disappointing sequel to “Chinatown.” Saturday at 8 p.m.

“The Exorcist III”--George C. Scott battles Satan in this sequel to the 1973 blockbuster. Sept. 15 at 2:30 a.m.

“Ghost”--Last year’s surprise smash features Whoopi Goldberg’s Oscar-winning turn as a psychic; Patrick Swayze and Demi Moore star. October.

“Pacific Heights”--A yuppie couple (Melanie Griffith and Matthew Modine) rent a room to the tenant from hell (Michael Keaton). October.

“Funny About Love”--Gene Wilder, Christine Lahti and Mary Stuart Masterson star in Leonard Nimoy’s romantic comedy. October.

“Memphis Belle”--Matthew Modine and Eric Stoltz star in this dramatization of the last flight of an American B-17 bomber during World War II. October.

“Postcards From the Edge”--Shirley MacLaine and Meryl Streep are battling mother and daughter in this comedy based on Carrie Fisher’s bestseller. October.

“Avalon”--Barry Levinson’s acclaimed portrait of his ancestors. November.

“GoodFellas”--Martin Scorsese’s masterpiece about life inside the mob; Ray Liotta, Robert De Niro and Joe Pesci, in an Oscar-winning performance, star. November.

“The Bonfire of the Vanities”--Bruce Willis, Tom Hanks and Melanie Griffith star in this disastrous version of Tom Wolfe’s bestseller. November.

“Marked for Death”--Steven Seagal is a burned-out former DEA agent in this action-thriller. November.

“Rocky V: The Final Bell”--Sylvester Stallone finally hangs up his gloves in this last installment in the series. November.

“Stephen King’s Graveyard Shift”--David Andrews, Stephen Macht and Brad Dourif star in this thriller from the prolific Mr. King. November.

“Reversal of Fortune”--Jeremy Irons received an Oscar for his role as socialite Claus Von Bulow; Glenn Close and Ron Silver co-star. December.

“Predator 2: Body Count”--Danny Glover and Ruben Blades battle the murderous alien. December.
