TV Engineer’s Body Found in Angeles Forest

Share

Sheriff’s fingerprint experts on Sunday identified a body found in Angeles National Forest as that of KCOP-TV engineering manager Jeffrey Bowman Webreck, who had been missing for five days.

A coroner’s spokesman said Webreck, 44, had been shot in the head.

Hikers on Saturday came across a shallow grave containing Webreck’s body near the Chilao Flats Campground, about 200 feet from the Angeles Crest Highway, the twisting route that traverses the San Gabriel Mountains. The site is about 25 miles east of where the highway begins in La Canada Flintridge.

His tan 1989 BMW was discovered Saturday at 11th Street and Central Avenue in downtown Los Angeles, about 40 miles west of where his body was found. Webreck disappeared about 11 p.m. Tuesday after leaving the television station in Hollywood for his home in Glendale. A man tried to use one of Webreck’s credit cards Friday in a Hollywood store but fled when a clerk asked for a second piece of identification.

Sheriff’s officials said there was too little information to immediately determine whether there was any link to a recent string of San Gabriel Valley murders involving bank card thefts, for which four people have been charged.
