Share

Mexican President Carlos Salinas de Gotari will speak to San Diego and Tijuana business and community leaders Sept. 28 about the proposed free-trade agreement between the U.S. and Mexico.

Later, in a closed session, Salinas will speak with academic and non-academic specialists on San Diego and Tijuana border problems at the Center for U.S.-Mexican Studies at the UC San Diego campus in La Jolla.

San Diego is the first stop the incumbent Mexican president will make in his three-day visit to California, which will include appearances at Stanford University and Los Angeles. At the luncheon, UC San Diego President David P. Gardner will present Salinas with the UCSD Medal.

Salinas is one of 25 to 30 specialists on Mexico from the United States, Mexico, Canada, the Far East and Europe to whom the center plays host each year.

Proceeds from the luncheon with business leaders will benefit the Center for U.S.-Mexican Studies endowment fund. The center is devoted to the study of U.S-Mexican relations, and is the largest in the nation. Salinas was an original member of the center’s international advisory board. The luncheon, at 12:45 p.m. at the Hotel del Coronado, is open to the public.
