CHARGER UPDATE : NOTEBOOK : Chargers Get Ready to Sign Former Lincoln Player Grayson

Share

The Chargers’ Tuesday merry-go-round continues.

The Chargers made plans to sign linebacker David Grayson, who played at San Diego Lincoln High School, and added linebacker Greg Clark to their roster. They also released former Redskin defensive lineman Darryl Grant, who joined the team Sept. 3, and linebacker Mike Wilcher, who played previously for the Rams.

Two weeks ago, the team used Tuesday to send quarterback Billy Joe Tolliver to Atlanta; last week they released offensive coordinator Ted Tollner.

This week’s roster moves were prompted by concern for the Chargers’ special teams.

“We needed more speed,” General Manager Bobby Beathard said. “Clark was one of Green Bay’s best players on special teams, and in Grayson we’re getting a young player with speed, who was one of the top players in the game at his position just a couple of years ago.”

Grayson started 37 games at outside linebacker for the Cleveland Browns before being released this exhibition season. His father, David Grayson Sr., played for Dallas (1961-1962), Kansas City (1963-1964) and Oakland (1965-1970) and was traded to the Chargers in 1971 for tackle Ron Mix. Grayson, however, was released by the Chargers before playing in a regular-season game.

“I’m probably the happiest guy in America right now,” the younger Grayson said. “I’ve been wanting to play here for a couple of years . . . all my family is here.”

Bad news. Before last week’s game with San Francisco, wide receiver Jerry Rice criticized his team for its run-oriented game plan, then Rice went out and caught nine passes for 170 yards, including two touchdowns.

This week it’s Atlanta wide receiver Andre Rison who is upset. Rison, who has caught only six passes for 36 yards, went on an Atlanta radio station Monday and said, “I wouldn’t mind if they traded me . . . I want out of here.”

The unhappy wide receiver was asked if would be wearing a black uniform this week, and he said, “That black uniform might be the Raiders.”

Last year Rison played in the Pro Bowl and set five club records, including most receptions in a season with 82.
