Schourek’s One-Hitter Leads Mets

Pete Schourek provided one of the few bright spots in the Mets’ season Tuesday in New York.

Schourek held the Montreal Expos to one hit, a two-out single in the fifth inning, and ended a five-game losing streak with a 9-0 victory.

Schourek (3-3), a 22-year-old left-hander, retired the first 14 Expos. He pitched his first complete game and contributed to the victory with a bases-loaded double in the seventh.

“I was thinking no-hitter,” Schourek said, “but a one-hitter is great.”

Howard Johnson hit his league-leading 33rd home run and drove in three runs to reach 98 runs batted in.
