SLUMP: Private contributions to UC Irvine were $22.1 million last year, off almost 20% from the previous fiscal year. . . . Roger Johnson, chair of the UCI Foundation board, blames “tough economic times.” The silver lining? Contributions earmarked for students were up 53% and those for instruction even more. One anonymous donor gave $426,000 for engineering fellowships.
