Buffalo Springfield Rides Again, Along With Others

Share

Just about every rock fan has heard of Neil Young and Stephen Stills, the twin towers of one of L.A.’s greatest ‘60s rock bands, the Buffalo Springfield. A good many have also heard of Richie Furay, the fine singer-songwriter (later of Poco) who ranked only third in Springfield.

As for Dewey Martin--well, drummers tend to get relegated to the background. Martin is the sole link to the storied past for Buffalo Springfield Again, which will be among the pop performers featured at the Taste of Newport. Three other musicians will help Martin re-create Springfield oldies. One of them, singer-guitarist Michael Curtis, is a former member of Crazy Horse, but he was not with the band during any of the periods when it was backing Neil Young.

Other name musical attractions at the festival include Billy Vera & the Beaters, the R&B; specialists who hit it big with “At This Moment,” and Juice Newton, whose rock-flavored country hits include “Queen of Hearts,” “Angel of the Morning” and “Love’s Been a Little Bit Hard on Me.”
