Man With Shotgun Holes Up in House

A man who was apparently upset because his wife had left him was barricaded inside his house Thursday night with a shotgun, police said, and had held off officers for more than three hours.

Neighbors and police said at least two gunshots were heard coming from the single-family house at 7630 Puerto Rico Drive. Police said they believed the man, identified as Patrick Vane, was alone inside.

“I thought I heard a shot (around 5 p.m.), but it wasn’t clear,” said Melody Pendarvis, who lives at 7590 Puerto Rico.

At 7:20 p.m., police told neighbors to stay inside, said Buena Park Police Officer Terry Branum. SWAT unit members were called at 9:20 p.m.

Police cordoned off the block, and paramedics and fire officials waited while officers, aided by two of Vane’s children and his sister-in-law, tried to negotiate with him.

“They’re trying to talk him into coming out and keep mentioning his kids and letting him know they’re worrying about him and the kids,” said Bill Devlin, who lives three houses away.

Pendarvis said the man and his wife apparently had been fighting and she left Thursday for Bakersfield with their other two children.
