BASEBALL / DAILY REPORT : ANGELS : McCaskill Will Get Start on Road
Pitcher Kirk McCaskill, pulled from the starting rotation so Manager Buck Rodgers could give Kyle Abbott, Mike Fetters and Scott Lewis two starts each, probably will start a game during the Angels’ trip to Texas and Chicago.
Senior Vice President Dan O’Brien said he has told McCaskill’s agent the Angels would welcome McCaskill back next season. However, O’Brien said discussions haven’t gone beyond that with McCaskill or the club’s other four free-agents-to-be.
McCaskill, who leads the major leagues with 18 losses, is looking forward to starting again. He also said he wouldn’t discuss his free agency until after the season.
Lee Stevens will be sidelined three to five days because of a sprained right wrist. He is not sure how it occurred but said he has had trouble with it. . . . Rodgers, a former catcher, has been impressed by the defensive skills of Ron Tingley and the potential of John Orton. Barry Lyons, the only September callup who hasn’t played, probably won’t see much action. . . . With 43 saves, the Angel bullpen has surpassed its 1990 total of 42.
