CALIFORNIA CITYSCAPES IN CONTEMPORARY ART by Mary Stofflet and James A. Clapp (Universe: $24.95). The catalogue from an exhibit at the San Diego Museum of Art, this slim volume offers a number of rather skewed visions of the California urban landscape. James Christensen paints a modest tract house on a red velvet cushion, which seems both ironic and appropriate at a time when houses have become an unobtainable luxury. Stephen Hopkin’s flattened views of San Francisco reduce that city to a garish set of flats for a toy theater. Curiously, none of these artists succeeds in capturing strange, fuliginous light produced by Los Angeles’ unique blend of sunlight and smog.
