A measure introduced by Los Angeles City Councilwoman Ruth Galanter to protect 200 acres of the El Segundo Dunes has been referred to two City Council committees.

The council on Friday sent Galanter’s proposal, which would preserve the land at the west end of Los Angeles International Airport, to the Planning and Land Use Management Committee and to the Commerce, Energy and Natural Resources Committee.

Members of Galanter’s staff said they expect the committees to approve revisions to the LAX-El Segundo Dunes Specific Plan and to return the matter to the full council.

The action is the first step toward formalizing an agreement reached a year ago among Galanter, Mayor Tom Bradley and airport officials to protect two-thirds of the land that is best known as a habitat for the El Segundo blue butterfly.

The remaining 100 acres will be used to build an 18-hole golf course.

The plan reverses an earlier proposal that would have made the golf course 200 acres, and the dune preserve 100 acres.
