Nancy Scranton finally answered her critics on the women’s professional tour.

Scranton, who has always been called a potentially great player, birdied the 17th and 18th holes Sunday to cap a four-under 31 on the back nine and win her first LPGA Tour championship, the du Maurier Classic at Coquitlam, Canada.

“I’ve heard about (the potential) for a long time,” Scranton said. “I wanted to win, and to win a big tournament--a major--is all the more satisfying.”

Scranton, who won $105,000, sank a birdie putt on 17 to break a tie with Debbie Massey, who three-putted the 18th to give Scranton a three-shot victory.

D.A. Weibring came from four shots behind to win the Hardee’s Classic at Coal Valley, Ill., by a stroke over Paul Azinger and Peter Jacobsen.

Weibring, 38, had seven birdies and a bogey for a six-under-par 64, his best round of the tournament at Oakwood Country Club. His four-round total was 267, 13-under par.

Weibring won the tournament in 1979, when it was called the Quad Cities Open.

Rocky Thompson shot a two-under-par 70 to win the Digital Seniors Classic at Concord, Mass.

Thompson’s second victory in 624 PGA tournaments, dating to 1964, was worth $60,000. He shot an 11-under 205.
