Mission Viejo Councilman William S. Craycraft has been named chairman of the Orange County Transportation Corridor Agencies’ operations committee, which will oversee construction of the planned Foothill and Eastern tollways.

Craycraft will head the committee for one year.

“It was quite unexpected,” Craycraft said, “I’m very honored. I’m looking forward to a very successful tenure on the committee.”

The Foothill toll road as planned will begin at Interstate 5, just south of San Clemente, and connect with the proposed Eastern tollway at a point east of the El Toro Marine Corps Air Station.

Work has begun on a seven-mile section of the southern portion of the Foothill tollway, which will eventually go through Mission Viejo, Craycraft said.

“This is a very critical time in the construction of the corridor,” said Craycraft, who is also a member of the TCA’s board of directors. “The two most important times in a project are the beginning, when things start to take shape, and near the end, when the conclusion of the project is in sight.”
