COLLEGE FOOTBALL DAILY REPORT : USC : Royster Will Be Back at Tailback Today

Share

Mazio Royster will start at tailback for USC after sitting out last week’s game because of a sprained knee, Coach Larry Smith said. . . . David Webb will move from defensive tackle to start at outside linebacker in place of Willie McGinest, who did not participate in contact drills this week after suffering a sprained ankle against Penn State. Matt Willig will replace Webb at tackle; McGinest will be available to play.

Smith said the return of senior guard Derrick Deese had a stabilizing effect on USC’s offensive line in last week’s 21-10 victory over Penn State. “With him in there, things seemed to be a lot calmer,” Smith said. “Derrick is a good leader and he took charge out there.”

Deese sat out all but a few practices in both the spring and summer and did not play in the opener against Memphis State because of tendinitis in his left knee. He talked about possibly redshirting this season, but Smith said that isn’t a consideration.

USC has been a successful opening act for the Beach Boys, who will play a 90-minute concert after today’s game against Arizona State at the Coliseum. Preceding concerts by the group in 1988 and 1989, the Trojans beat California, 35-3, and Oregon State, 48-9.
