Gays Not Laughing

Share

Your columnist, Tony Perry, in his “San Diego at Large” (Aug. 30), cites with obvious amusement a sign carried by an anti-gay fundamentalist picketer protesting the San Diego Police Department’s decision (finally!) to hire more gay officers.

To those of us who have kept a watchful and wary eye on the Anita Bryants and Jimmy Swaggarts of the world, the line he quotes is not a new one--it’s that old chestnut about God making Adam and Eve not Adam and Steve. Ha-ha.

Well sorry, Tony, but like that other queen, Victoria, we are not amused. I find it hard to believe that, as the number of hate crimes against gay people continues to grow and as the AIDS holocaust continues to claim our lives, the repressive bigotry of these reactionaries can still be passed off as cute and harmless. By reprinting this blurb with his broad wink, Mr. Perry keeps the gentleman’s agreement: All us “normal” guys know who’s one of us and who’s expendable.
