So Clemson was looking ahead after all.

But it didn’t matter. The No. 8 Tigers still had what it took to defeat Temple, 37-7, Saturday at Clemson, S.C.

All week, the Tigers insisted they weren’t peering past the Owls to their showdown next week with 17th-ranked Georgia Tech.

But after a sluggish first half Saturday, Clemson Coach Ken Hatfield acknowledged the obvious.

“I don’t think we had our minds completely on the game, with Georgia Tech just being on television Thursday night and we have them next week,” Hatfield said.

Tailback Ronald Williams agreed the Tigers may have been looking ahead to the Yellow Jackets, who beat Virginia, 24-21, Thursday night.

“I don’t think our minds were there,” Williams said. “We thought we could come in on our natural talent alone.”

Despite being outplayed and turning the ball over on their first two possessions, the Tigers (2-0) led 14-7 at halftime after DeChane Cameron threw a six-yard touchdown pass to Dwayne Bryant with 24 seconds left.

Temple (0-3) had 15 yards passing, the lowest total in school history.

West Virginia 37, Maryland 7--Adrian Murrell accounted for 141 of his team’s 334 rushing yards and scored two touchdowns for the Mountaineers at College Park, Md.

West Virginia (3-1) rushed for 229 yards, 93 of them by Murrell, in building a 21-7 halftime lead.

The Terrapins (1-2) had surrendered only 231 yards and one touchdown on the ground in their previous two games, but couldn’t stop Murrell, who had 20 carries.

North Carolina State 30, Wake Forest 3--Gary Downs ran for two touchdowns at Winston-Salem, N.C., and the Wolfpack’s defense kept an opponent out of the end zone for the fourth consecutive regular-season game.

Wake Forest’s Mike Green kicked a 34-yard field goal, which marks the only points North Carolina State, 3-0 overall and 1-0 in the Atlantic Coast Conference, has given up this season.

Wake Forest is 1-1 and 0-1.

South Carolina 28, Virginia Tech 21--Bobby Fuller passed for 238 yards and two touchdowns and freshman running back Terry Wilburn scored the winning touchdown as the Gamecocks beat the Hokies at Columbia, S.C.

Wilburn, starting for the first time, broke a 21-21 tie with a six-yard run on a draw play late in the third quarter. After that, Virginia Tech (1-2) had two passes intercepted and lost a fumble.

South Carolina (1-1-1) had no turnovers.

Duke 42, Colgate 14--Dave Brown completed 18 of 40 passes for 238 yards and three touchdown as the Blue Devils (2-0-1) pulled away from the Division I-AA Red Raiders (0-3) at Durham, N.C.
