From Times Staff and Wire Reports

A first-time mother said she tried to delay giving birth until after a gunman carrying an 18-pound dynamite bomb gave up his siege of the hospital’s maternity wing. But Christan Downey, 22, delivered her baby during the 18-hour standoff. Her new daughter became the ninth hostage of Richard L. Worthington, who had killed a nurse when he stormed the Women’s Health Center at Alta View Hospital 15 miles south of Salt Lake City.
