Five Manchester United soccer fans were jailed for seven months and fined $2,500 each after being convicted in Athens, Greece, of wrecking a bar during a brawl after their club tied, 0-0, with Athinaikos in a European Cup Winners’ Cup match.

Eight United fans were charged after the brawl in the seaside suburb of Glyfada Friday--two days after the English club drew, 0-0, with Athinaikos in a European Cup Winners’ Cup match.

Three were acquitted of assault and causing extensive material damage and freed.

Under Greek law, the jailed fans can buy off the sentences. Court officials said their families had been contacted, and they were trying to raise the money.
