Left wing Robbie Nichols scored two goals to lead the White team to a 7-4 victory over the Red team in the second of two public scrimmages conducted by the International Hockey League’s Gulls at the San Diego Sports Arena. Nichols, one of only seven players in training camp who are signed, helped his team avenge a 7-3 loss from the previous day.

Mike Sanderson, a free agent left wing who played juniors for the Saskatoon Blades of the Western Hockey League last year, scored twice for the Red team, while Keith Gretzky had an assist. For the second consecutive day, the veteran players were impressive.

“The younger players should be taking control,” Coach Don Waddell said. “Right now is the time they should be doing what they do best.”

Waddell said the first cuts will be Tuesday. But as few as three to five of the 31 free agents may make the final 22-man roster if the Gulls reach a final agreement with three NHL teams. Waddell said he expects eight to 10 Gulls players to be NHL farmhands.
