BASEBALL / DAILY REPORT : DODGERS : Team to Decide on Postseason Shares

Share

The first signs of postseason will appear Wednesday, when the Dodgers will have a luncheon meeting at their San Diego hotel to divide potential shares of division championship and postseason money.

The meeting will be attended only by those Dodgers who have been with the team the entire season. Because each is guaranteed a full share, they are empowered to decide which other players and support personnel (batboys, grounds crew members) receive partial or full shares.

Decisions will be made on such players as Mitch Webster, Roger McDowell, Steve Wilson, and former Dodgers Mike Hartley and Jose Gonzalez.

“I’ve been in a lot of these, and I’m just glad I don’t have to be in this one,” said Webster, who will be voted partial shares from both the Dodgers and East champion Pittsburgh Pirates, where he played earlier this year. “These things can be sort of unusual, with everybody voting on different guys. Usually, though, it works out for the best.”

Alfredo Griffin was limping through the clubhouse Sunday after spraining his right knee on a slide into third base. Trainers will know more about his condition in a couple of days, but he is not expected to miss any games . . . Mark Cresse, the Dodgers’ bullpen coach, could not believe the reception that awaited him in the clubhouse immediately after Saturday night’s ninth-inning victory. The players were standing in front of their lockers singing “Happy Birthday” to him in celebration of his 40th birthday. Lenny Harris presented him with a cake, then warned Cresse that the icing might be sour. Cresse leaned over to smell the cake, and Harris pushed his face into it.

Gary Carter met with Manager Tom Lasorda before Sunday’s game to smooth any friction caused by Carter’s comments published Saturday. Carter had spoken about being unhappily surprised when he was not in the lineup. “I just wanted Tommy, and everybody, to know that if it wasn’t for Tommy, I wouldn’t even be on this team,” Carter said. “I didn’t want to cause any problems with my comments, I was just frustrated at not playing, like every player in here gets frustrated at not playing.”

Mark Lemke left Sunday’s game in the fifth inning with a strained right hamstring. He was replaced by Jeff Treadway, who before the game said a cortisone shot had not helped his sore right hand.
