Woman Killed, Man Hurt in Coast Highway Crash

A woman was killed and her male passenger was critically injured early Monday morning when a speeding tow truck hit the couple’s car as it attempted to make a U-turn on Pacific Coast Highway, police said.

The accident occurred when a Toyota attempted to turn from the northbound to the southbound lanes of PCH just south of Sunset Boulevard near Pacific Palisades, said Officer Lee Willmon of the LAPD’s West Traffic Division.

“The tow truck was northbound, probably at a high rate of speed,” Willmon said. “The driver of the tow truck anticipated the turn and hit the brakes, but the truck broadsided the car . . . there was nothing left of it.”

The car’s driver, whose name was not released, died at the scene of the 2:30 a.m. crash. City paramedics took a passenger from the car to Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, where he was in critical condition, Willmon said. The tow truck driver was uninjured.
