Luginbill Criticizes Rough, Physical Play of Air Force
San Diego State gained a running back, but five others missed practice because of injuries, and Coach Coach Al Luginbill accused Air Force of playing dirty football.
“The way they blocked our outside linebackers . . . to me totally does not belong in football,” Luginbill said. “They’re going to rip kids’ knees out the way their running backs block outside linebackers.
“They’ve been doing it for years. It’s part of their offense. I don’t believe in it, but it’s part of it.”
Running back Curtis Butts, who missed last week for personal reasons, returned to practice, but SDSU was down three defensive linemen--Turaj Smith (ankle), Ramondo Stallings (ankle) and Steve Matuszewicz (groin). Also missing practice were linebacker Andy Covillo (shoulder) and offensive lineman Joe Heinz (knee).
All are day-to-day and none have been ruled out for Thursday’s game against UCLA.
Receiver Patrick Rowe, who has two bruised shoulders, practiced Monday but did not participate in contract drills.
