BASEBALL DAILY REPORT : AROUND THE MAJOR LEAGUES : Cashen Will Turn Over Mets’ Reins
Frank Cashen, who built the New York Mets into the winningest team of the 1980s, will step down as general manager after the season, with executive vice president Al Harazin taking over.
Cashen said he would remain as the club’s chief operating officer for the 1992 season and as a consultant in 1993. Harazin, who has been in charge of the business end of the club, will take over such matters as trades and free-agent signings.
The Mets (74-78) are having their worst season since 1983. From 1981 through 1990, Cashen’s teams had the best winning percentage in baseball at .539 (840-719).
Outfielder Ivan Calderon of the Montreal Expos underwent surgery on his left shoulder, which was injured earlier this season when he fell while diving for a ball.
Calderon finishes with a .300 average, 19 home runs and 75 runs batted in. He leads the club in all three categories.
