A federal jury has awarded $1.2 million to a sailor who was injured five years ago while stepping out of the shower on a supertanker owned by Mobil Oil Co.

Conrad Leslie, 30, received the award Friday after a three-day trial, said his attorney, John Marin. The San Diego jury deliberated for about five hours before arriving at a verdict, he added.

Leslie, a graduate of the California Maritime Academy, was injured in October, 1986, on his third trip to sea, Marin said. According to Marin, the jury found Mobil responsible for the accident because it failed to maintain the non-skid paint on the shower floor.

Leslie has had two surgeries on his knee, but the injury ended his maritime career, said Marin. The accident occurred on Mobil Arctic while the ship was en route from Panama to Los Angeles, the attorney said.

Mobil’s attorneys in Long Beach did not return phone calls and could not be reached for comment.
